Winnie eats at Annexe

I often write about food on this blog, reviewing places in London but I should really pay more attention to my own city as Birmingham has plenty of great places to eat. The Birmingham food scene has a pretty good reputation. It’s the only UK city outside London, Dublin, Edinburgh and Cardiff to have 4 Michelin stars (yay, go Brum!) While, I’ve yet to eat at any of the Michelin starred restaurants, I intend to visit them all…so watch this space.

restaurant-birmingham-european-vintage-italian-french-cuisine-cafe-society-mediterranean-6c17_oI recently visited Annexe, a little French/Italian inspired restuarant which I found after searching for decent places to eat that weren’t the usual run of the mill. It has amazing reviews on Trip Advisor and my cousin and I decided to see what the fuss was all about.

The location isn’t far from the city centre (about a 15 minute walk from the Bullring shopping centre) and located opposite the iconic Victorian Law Courts. As you walk in, the decor really hits you, it has a nostalgic, vintage French cafe vibe with black and white films projected onto screens and walls. It’s a pretty cute set up. It’s cosy, has plenty of ambience and the staff are attentive and friendly.

Porcini mushroom, polenta, sage and mozzarella fritti, sauted spinach and nutmeg with truffle oil

Let’s talk about the food! The starter was lovely – the fritti perfectly crisp, well seasoned and there wasn’t too much mozzarella for it to be overly noticeable. I could have eaten two of them.

For my main, I opted for the slow roast pork belly. When it comes to a menu, pork belly is always a safe choice but quelle horreur if they don’t get the skin nice and crisp! I needn’t have feared as it was perfectly crisp and the meat really tender. Everything worked so well with the coarse grain mustard jus which was sweetened by the honey from the roast vegetables.

I SAPORI DEL MONDO

WONDERFUL EVENING! ANNEXE, BIRMINGHAM CITY CENTRE.

An incredible evening at Annexe! There are no words to fault this restaurant. A fusion restaurant of both French and Italian cuisine; it was sheer food heaven! You know those occasions where you try something and it tastes so good that you smile like an idiot and you do a little dance in your chair (don’t act like you don’t do it!), it was one of those evenings!!!

restaurant-birmingham-european-vintage-italian-french-cuisine-cafe-society-mediterranean-4384Annexe is a small and intimate restaurant rustically decorated as one would imagine for a French/ Italian dining experience. The tables were very well decorated with a small candle which even though each table had one made the diner felt like it was a personal gesture. The lighting was dim which also complimented the candle setting which made the restaurant even more intimate and romantic. Entering the restaurant alone made you feel calm, relaxed and welcomed. The lady that served us for the evening was very polite, accommodating and gentle in her manner of speaking.

For starters we ordered leak and asparagus soup and a salmon soufflé. Soup is a common starter dish in restaurants in the UK but I am yet to fault it as a choice on a menu; it is very simple to make but sometimes simple is the best dish that one can order. The soup was very flavoursome, exactly what I needed to keep warm at this time of year.

The soufflé was divine! I am a massive salmon lover and I was in for a real treat! A warm and hearty dish that was rather ‘salmony’ but gorgeous. The sauce that completed this dish was not heavy, thick or dense but classically aromatic and creamy.

restaurant-birmingham-european-vintage-italian-french-cuisine-cafe-society-mediterranean-4383For main we had the Côte de Boeuf with garlic portabella mushrooms, confit tomatoes, winter greens and hand cut chips. The meat also came with 3 types of sauce these were: peppercorn, bordelaise and Bleu D’Auvergne. Just writing about it is making my mouth water. The meat was cooked to medium rare as requested, the tenderness of the meat was beyond believe which to my knowledge and understanding suggested that the beef had been hung and tenderised for an extended period of time. Also, the piece was well carved as there were no nerves or unwanted chewiness whilst indulging in this delightful meal. The sides that accompanied the beef were very complimentary; the hand cut chips were hot in temperature and very light and airy suggesting its freshness in preparation prior to concocting this fabulous dish.

Friendly, beautiful place. Excellent food in a gorgeous setting.

The outside is nothing to go by on what is in the inside.

Lovely friendly staff, but not over the top. Excellent food, not over priced.

Good value. Throughly enjoyed myself, will return.

“Fantastic ambience and expertly executed food”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed by John P, Birmingham

This place really is a hidden gem.

We only found it through the magic of the internet but what a find.

The decor, ambience, and style is just great. The service is professional and to the point.

My wife’s main course of pork cheeks with apricot polenta was the highlight meal of a very ‘foodie’ week.

“Great but over-priced!”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed by Essi J, Birmingham

My boyfriend and I went here yesterday for my birthday dinner and we were very excited. The atmosphere of the restaurant is fantastic (music, lighting, size) but it was quite empty for a friday.

We had the seafood starter board, annexe rossini, strudel and for dessert the sharing platter and the tiramisini. The starter was rather plain (the mussels were in what tasted like Heinz tomato soup) and the tiramisini was not worth the money (plain ice cream).

BUT the main was delicious on both parts. Overall it was wonderful and I am ok to spend a little more on an occassion but 110 pounds for all that didn’t seem fair.

But I do have to repeat: my strudel was SO DELICIOUS.

“Mixed feelings”

3 of 5 stars Reviewed by 00Duke00, Birmingham

Warm and inviting atmosphere with soft jazz music and subdued lighting. Efficient and friendly service.

The starters were both fine – I had the prosciutto and my partner the aubergine.
The mains were a mixed bag. Mine, the scallops, were overcooked and greasy. My partner’s, she had the swordfish with lentils, was good but far from great.

Add a bottle of wine, two desserts and one espresso and you walk out about 100 pounds poorer.

Pretty pricey and if you take into account the average culinary experience, overpriced.
But we liked the ambiance so we’ll give it another chance.

Annexe_Restaurant, Manager at Annexe, responded to this review

Dear Sir, Thanks for visiting Annexe. I am delighted you enjoyed your visit, in particular the ambience and service. I am happy that you liked your starters and, presumably, your desserts. However I am disappointed that you did not enjoy your mains as much as we would have liked, particularly the scallops. We have investigated but, since the scallops change daily and we do not know when you visited we can’t pin down exactly what happened. Perhaps you could email us with more detail so we can investigate properly?

Regarding the price, we believe our menu is excellent value with an a la carte spend per person for three courses ranging from £25 to £46 pounds, according to your choices. Our house wine is currently £15.95 for a bottle which we also believe represents excellent value for the quality. Clearly there are more expensive options on the wines and we make great cocktails and coffee too, so there is plenty of temptation; but in the end it is down to the customer to decide what they order and how much they wish to spend!

I hope you will email over more information and look forward to seeing you again soon so we can show you how good our top-selling scallops should be!
Yours,
Damien

“Excellent Meal For Two At Annexe”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed by GarySkuse, Birmingham

My wife & I pre-booked via the website for dinner on Tuesday the 26th at 20:30. Having read the good reviews we thought it would be worth a visit and we were not disappointed. Our table was ready on arrival and we were seated at once. The tables have sufficient space around them to ensure your comfort. Lighting is sufficient.

We chose wine by the glass to start – I had a 250ml Vincent Bouquet Merlot (£6.90) and my wife had 175ml Cotes de Saint Mont rose (£5.70) – these were very nice.

Starters, I chose freshly made soup (Bean & Lentil, £5.25) and my wife chose Scallops of the day (£8.50) The starters were great and well enjoyed.

Mains, I chose Grilled Rib-eye 8oz (£18.50) Served with wild rocket, balsamic onions & parmesan, hand cut chips & peppercorn sauce – Well Done – The steak was cooked exactly how I like it and was perfect.

My wife chose the Fish Board (£16.95) Crab, ginger & mascarpone wontons – spiced tiger prawns -seafood provençale – smoked salmon – samphire grass – salsa verde – this was excellent too.

We absolutely enjoyed our meal, and the service was excellent too – we did not have room for a dessert – total cost was £67.98 plus tip. We recommend you try Annexe if you are in Birmingham and looking for a great meal.

I hope you find my review helpful.
