All the things a girl loves…

We then went to The Annexe for our dinner, neither of us had ever been before so I was very excited! The restaurant itself is beautiful. There is a bar at the front with tables and a large dining room at the back – this is where we sat. The restaurant has a 1920’s theme, its very dark inside with candles everywhere and black and white films playing on a huge projector screen.

The place is very likeable, service was very good and the menu has many yummy choices. The food shows skill- each dish carefully thought about.

We ordered our drinks and looked through the amazing menu- each dish sounding as good as the next. We were given some bread to eat whilst looking through the menu; always a bonus in my eyes! We decided to have starters and mains- for somewhere so nice it wasn’t as expensive as I expected. Starters range from £4-8 and mains from £16-25.

restaurant-birmingham-european-vintage-italian-french-cuisine-cafe-society-mediterranean-003It took me ages to decide what starter to have bur eventually I went for…

Twice baked smoked salmon & mascarpone soufflé £ 6.50
Pecorino – leeks – chive pangrattato

WOW- this was delicious! I hadn’t really had soufflé before but everyone recommends it and this one sounded particularly nice. The presentation was very good, simple but effective and the taste matched! It was gorgeous- the soufflé was cooked perfectly and went so well with the smoked salmon and mascarpone, the leeks really gave it extra flavour too. It was a delicious, beautiful blend of creamy leeks with cheesy taste and fresh smoked salmon. All amazing tastes blended together- what more could you want?!

For my main, you definitely won’t be surprised what I chose…

restaurant-birmingham-european-vintage-italian-french-cuisine-cafe-society-mediterranean-0004Duo of pork £17.95
Slow roast suckling pig – crispy ham hock bon bons – celeriac & pear gratin – cauliflower puree

Again, stunning presentation. I loved the slate plate and the simplicity of the food lay out- it looked like a piece of art almost! WOW- the taste exceeded my expectations, you all know how much I love belly pork therefore, this had a lot to live up to and I certainly wasn’t disappointed in any way. The slow roast belly pork was cooked to perfection, tender pork with a crispy outside, the crispy ham hock bon bons were so different but lovely, they were a lovely mixture of soft ham hock in the middle and a crispy outside- the celeriac and pear gratin was delicious, it tasted just like potato dauphinoise but slightly creamier and you could taste the pears- which went very well with the pork. The cauliflower puree finished the dish off nicely, I don’t even like cauliflower but this was so tasty and complimented the rest of the dish so well. 10/10 dish and I couldn’t fault it at all. Yummy from the first to last bite.

We were quite full but we decided to share a dessert…

restaurant-birmingham-european-vintage-italian-french-cuisine-cafe-society-mediterranean-005Lemon, Lime & Limoncello Posset £5.50
with crispy ginger snaps

Again, the meal finished with beautiful presentation. The shot of limoncello was a nice touch- even though its very strong! The posset was so tasty, very light and refreshing. Lemon and lime compliment each other deliciously. Posset used to be a medieval drink, which has been turned into a modern desert. The crispy ginger snap finished this desert perfectly! At £5.50 its such a reasonable price too. Perfect, perfect, perfect!!

This was one of the nicest meals I have ever had and at £70 for two, I feel it was reasonable value. The food was to die for and was perfect in every way. I have no faults- except that the restaurant was very hot but it is the summer!

Everyone needs to go to this restaurant!….. READ MORE

“Amazing food! Quirky ambience!”

5 of 5 stars for Annexe – Vintage Restaurant – Reviewed by Clare O, Birmingham

A little gem in a street you might not expect.Old movies playing on the wall, with old style French music playing softly in the background.

You feel like you are in a complete different era to now, more sophisticated era.

The staff were quick to serve you and the food was simply to die for!

You couldn’t help but have three courses!

It was a little pricy and they put a mandatory 10% on your bill whether you wanted it or not.

But worth it for a special night.

“Great theme, great food, great restaurant”

5 of 5 stars for Annexe – Vintage Restaurant – Reviewed by Telza00, Birmingham

Lovely restaurant, totally different inside from what you would expect if you just looked at the outside.

We had a table in the back of the building which is fitted out in a lovey retro French design.

Very romantic atmosphere.

We had the cheese fondant to share to start with and it was amazing!

Followed by the core de beouf which was again amazing.

We ended up in the restaurant for about 3 hours in total and didn’t feel rushed in the slightest.

Highly recommend a visit to this little gem if you are in Birmingham.

“You won’t
need a coat”

4 of 5 stars for Annexe – Vintage Restaurant – Reviewed by TheSouthwickGrants, Birmingham

We booked The Annexe as part of a reunion and on recommendations.

The building is like a Tardis, with small frontage, but cavernous inside. The decor is different and has that Jazz Club feel. With old Black and white movies being projected onto the wall.

The menu’s for both food and drink were extensive and enjoyable. A couple of issues we had though we’re the chairs and temperature. Half the seats were high backed and open and half, wooden with an enclosed band around your back. These were incredibly uncomfortable and we could see why all wouldn’t have been the other sort?

The temperature issue, hit you the minute you entered and got even worse for those of us seated in front of.

“Amazing Food and
lovely atmosphere.”

4 of 5 stars for Annexe – Vintage Restaurant – Reviewed by MrAndMrsPark, Birmingham

Visited here for a family meal. Had to pay a £50 deposit which wasn’t keen on at first. My dad then got took ill and had to rearrange at last moment but they were very kind about this over the phone and wasn’t a problem at all!

The decoration is so nice, old movies were playing on the walls which were a nice touch. The staff were so friendly and helpful! Even the toilets were nice!

We had some lovely food, I had steak which was cooked beautifully. Lots of fish also on the menu. The desserts were fabulous! We realised after we left they forgot to add them onto the bill. There was a lot of choice on the menu and there were a lot of drink choices.

Except I ordered a cocktail (unsure of the name). I enjoy (too) many cocktails but this tasted just like I was drinking a bottle of perfume. I stuck to wine after that!

All in all it came to £150 for a family of 5, excluding desserts obviously. That also including many drinks and a bottle of wine so not bad really.

Not really a place for children either, my little boy had to settle for chips and ice cream.

Overall very impressed, would highly recommend especially for a romantic meal.

“Poor food,
nice atmosphere,
poor service”

3 of 5 stars for Annexe – Vintage Restaurant – Reviewed by Jabbawoki, Birmingham

Had a recent meal for two having heard a lot about this place and seen rave reviews. the atmosphere was very pleasant and it is a nice restaurant. However, the food is poor. It was not fresh, it was not even cooked through.

We had a starter which mentioned expensive ingredients, but had nothing but an essence of them, and was then filler. The main course was fine, but overpriced. The dessert was best. What is seen as good service here is somebody trying to fill your wine glass every two seconds, to a point of irritation and distraction.

The food arrived so quickly and with the service to ensure that you finished your bottle of wine in ten minutes flat, it was not a pleasant experience but a rushed one. I would not recommend this restaurant, especially for vegetarians.

Annexe_Restaurant, General Manager at Annexe, responded to this review

Dear Sir / Madam,

Thanks for visiting Annexe – I am glad you liked the place! I am sorry you felt the food was not to standard. Your comments are confusing: are you suggesting none of your dishes were fresh or cooked through? If so, I am afraid you are incorrect – all our food is freshly cooked and cooked to the appropriate/requested level – of course mistakes can be made, but not to that extent! We are not in the habit of overcooking food, but if you prefer your dishes very well done, please ask us if we can do it.

I am disappointed to hear about your starter, but you provide no detail as to what it was or what the “expensive ingredients” were, nor for the main course, thus I am unable to investigate or respond. Perhaps you can email more details so I can look into it?

I am sorry that you did not like the service, but we do believe in pouring wine for customers when we have the opportunity to do so (clearly not “every two seconds”). Most customers appreciate the gesture. If you prefer us not to do so you are better to tell your waiter and, in any event, we only pour the wine in the glass – we do not set the speed at which you drink it.

I am sorry you did not enjoy the experience as much as we would have liked you to but I hope you might come back to give us another try, when we can show you the type of food and service upon which our reputation is built.
Yours,
Alex

“Best steak I have had for sometime”

4 of 5 stars for Annexe – Vintage Restaurant – Reviewed by  Maggie F, Birmingham

We had a table booked for 8:30 the restaurant was quiet but the bar area was very busy. My daughter and I shared the cote de boeuf which was an impressive and tasty piece of meat (chips were underdone). My daughters boyfriend also had an excellent steak.

Can’t remember what my husband had but it was very good too. The puddings were very good and not too large. A duo of creme caramel, chocolate and vanilla and strawberry trifle. Service was very attentive. Enjoyed the ambiance and the black and white films.

“Tripadvisor reviews gave me unrealistic expectations”

3 of 5 stars for Annexe – Vintage Restaurant – Reviewed by AEGUK, Birmingham

We booked a table online, which said that the only times available would be 1830 or 2100, so we took 1830, however when we turned up, there was no one in the restaurant! People began to trickle in about 7, but it was definitely not fully booked! The ambiance felt weird being the only people in the restaurant.

The food was good, but not amazing like I thought it would have been based on the TripAdvisor reviews. I had the swordfish, which was tasty. Overall, I think it was a good restaurant but I do not feel particularly compelled to go back or send my friends there.

Annexe_Restaurant, General Manager at Annexe, responded to this review

Dear Sir / Madam,

Thanks for visiting Annexe. I am glad you appreciated the restaurant and the you liked the food, especially the swordfish.

Regarding the bookings, they are staggered and our system allows a set number of people per booking time in order that we can provide optimal service to all customers and do not over book. Clearly, when you booked, all the slots between 1845 and 2045 were full.

However, as much as we would like customers to arrive at the times they book for, they don’t always do so and it would seem that on this occasion the first bookings arrived late. I can assure you that it was fully booked, but it was so for the whole night not specifically for your slot (we do not do “sittings” – the table is yours for as long as you want it).

I am sorry that you felt a little lonely initially, but I hope that you can appreciate we cannot control customer arrivals to such a specific degree and that our system works in a staggered way for customers own benefit.

I hope that you will come back so we can show you the real buzz and atmosphere that Annexe creates!

Yours,
Alex
